The PAK-IT Project compiled a portable set of state-of-the-art technology in a way that could be used to support demonstrations aimed at increasing the awareness and education of USAID development professionals. The project included the acquisition and integration of a range of information technologies, tools, and applications that have specific value to the international development community, including USAID and its development partners. The major theme being showcased is that of Open Source solution sets.
In order to demonstrate the way Open Source technology can change the way people work, Alexius wanted to create a tool that would allow project managers to visualize how their organizations could operate if they were to implement more Open Source software. Among these Open Source solutions we include:
- backoffice and network services (authentication, security, traffic shaping, , etc)
- internet services including email, chat, and voice over IP
- e-gov and e-commerce demo applications
- productivity applications, such as project management planning tools
- web applications such as Internet portals
- workflow tools for case tracking and process automation
- marketing and graphic design tools
- software that enables the maintenance of the system
The physical components of PAK-IT include two servers, the thin client, three Laptops with multiple operating systems, two PDAs and the peripherals, which include the printer, projector and wireless router. The project also includes preparing documentation and scripts for undertaking such a transition and an initial set of awareness oriented demonstrations.
Open Source software gives the international development community a low-cost solution for all levels of IT needs. Organizations can dramatically improve the way they interact with the people they serve, which results in more efficient civil interaction and better business practices. All of this helps these organizations provide more effective aid work as more of their financial resources and time may be dedicated to focusing on social, economic and educational needs.
