Alexius International (AI) is an International Development firm that focuses on innovative ICT solutions, Technology Services, and Media Production as our main development vehicles. AI is based in Washington, DC with offices around the world.
AI is opening positions for its Fellowship Program seeking self-motivated and innovative people to work with our unique and talented team of consultants. Within this fellowship, you will work closely with a small, cross-functional team that is well versed in a broad range of technologies and development strategies.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with development practitioners who specialize in providing innovative ICT solutions for development programs funded by USAID and other local and international organizations. Learn about the different methodologies being leveraged to facilitate economic and social development for rural communities, public institutions, private sector growth, and overall program management. You will also be exposed to the field of business development, which will help build working relationships for AI as well as yourself. Your audience for the communication materials will include major players in the international development arena such as: foreign ministries, international donors, US government agencies, and beneficiaries of foreign aid.
Location: Fellows will work out of the Washington DC office.
Valued competences and skill sets:
- Competence or ability to quickly become competent in – web and desktop publishing, podcasting, flash/multi-media presentations, video/audio production & editing. Familiarity with Mac OS X is preferred.
- Researching – highly developed research skills and ability to build effective arguments and back them with both qualitative and quantitative data.
- Effective writing – past experience and strong interest in writing and publishing articles and research papers, preferably for the general public. Educational/professional background heavy with writing experience preferred – such as Journalism, Communications, and English.
- Self-starter, high level of energy, initiative, creative, resourceful, and able to work with little direction and supervision
- Excellent customer relationship development and management skills
- Ability to coordinate with other staff and subject matter experts to respond to customer requirements and build solutions
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Exceptional organizational skills – must be detailed oriented
- Strong data gathering (especially interviews) ability and problem solving skills
- Proficiency in a foreign language, Spanish preferred
- Have recently obtained a graduate degree or is enrolled in a graduate program
- At least 2+ years of relevant experience
- Experience living abroad, preferably in developing countries
- Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
- Pluses: knowledge of CRM, CMS (zope/plone), Project Management Software, Screenflow, iLife, Final Cut Express, Photoshop, Development theory, and Mac OS X.
Illustrative Fellow Roles and Functions:
Develop Marketing Materials: you’ll work with our business units to develop marketing materials, taking a leading role in the process from brainstorming and generating ideas and concepts to designing and presenting the materials to Alexius staff.
Business Development: you’ll network with clients, be involved in public relations, assist in the launch of newly developed business units, present progress reports and research results to colleagues and clients, attend conferences and meetings, and collaborate with our proposal writing team (RFP research, screening, evaluation, and response).
Research, Content Development, and Portal Publishing: you’ll do targeted research for projects; report on development topics for our project portfolio; interview, research, and use other data gathering methods to create articles, newsletters, and concept papers related to AI’s development projects; and publish content in web portals. Current areas of research include small business development, business incubation, mbanking, rural telecom, and virtual social networking (i.e. second life). There is currently and exciting project that will require the management and operations of an industry specific news portal.
Design and Develop Multimedia Materials: you’ll release weekly and quarterly progress reports on current projects; update news and content on the AI portal; take a leading role in producing multimedia materials, from script writing to video, audio, and image capture and editing to final production of video documentaries, podcasts, and audio media.
Operations Management: support office operations in our DC location; create agendas and run staff meetings; and support human resources and participate in the hiring process.
Compensation: The fellowship pays a monthly stipend.
